The New York State Board on Electric Generation Siting and the Environment has unanimously approved, with conditions, a new 800 megawatt power plant in Scriba, Oswego County.
The Jan. 17 vote followed a nine-month environmental and technical review of the project under Article X of the Public Service Law.
The planned plant is an addition to the existing 1,042-megawatt Independence Plant operated by Sithe Energies, Inc. Power generated at the facility will be sold on New York's wholesale market.
At public hearings in Scriba, all comments received supported the application, the siting board said.
"The approval of this application demonstrates that the Article X process can work as intended," said Neal N. Galvin, board chairman.
