James R. Houghton, past chairman of The Business Council, to receive 2010 Corning Award for Excellence

ALBANY— James R. Houghton, former chairman and CEO of Corning Incorporated, will receive The Business Council of New York State's Corning Award for Excellence for 2010.

Houghton will receive the award Thursday evening, September 30, at The Business Council's Annual Meeting at The Sagamore, Bolton Landing, NY.

The Business Council gives the award each year to a New Yorker who has shown outstanding accomplishment and a deep and sustained commitment to the people of New York. The first Corning Award was presented in 1979.

Houghton began his career with Corning in 1962. He served in various production, financial and sales positions. He rose to the position of chairman of the board and chief executive officer. He retired from the company as Chairman of the Board Emeritus in April 2010.

Houghton also served as the Chairman of the Board of Directors of The Business Council of New York State in 1988 and 1989. A recognized business leader, he served on several business boards including MetLife, Exxon Mobil Corporation, and JP Morgan. In addition Houghton served in many philanthropic capacities including the senior member of the Harvard Corporation and member of the board of the Corning Glass Museum, and The Pierpont Morgan Library.

Over the years he has given a great deal to The Business Council and other institutions that are part of the fabric of our state. He has been a leader for the business community and a champion for the arts and cultural life of New York,” said Kenneth Adams, president and CEO of The Business Council. “Corning launched this prestigious award 31 years ago; now it's time to turn back to this fine company and present the Corning Award to one of its own – Jamie Houghton.”

Houghton's older brother, Amo Houghton, was a founder of The Business Council of New York State in 1980. He received The Corning Award for Excellence in 2004.
