Statement from Heather C. Briccetti Esq., president and CEO of The Business Council of New York State, Inc.:

"The Business Council of New York State strongly supports the higher academic standards in the Common Core and believes that the state must continue to implement the curriculum without delay. We also recognize that several corrective actions must be taken in order to be sure that there is a smooth transition to these new, more rigorous standards.

"Education reform is important and it is important to get it right. Only 35 percent of students graduate college or are career-ready in New York State. Each year 140,000 students graduate unprepared for the post-high school world. This is a disservice to the students and detrimental to our state's economy. Community colleges are spending approximately $70 million each year on remediation and businesses are unable to find the skilled workers they need. If anything, the process should be accelerated."
